Choosing roofing materials

An important part of building a new home or roof renovation is choosing the right roofing material. Ask yourself which qualities you want from your roof; durability, easy maintenance, modern or more traditional looks? Consider your budget in the light of the qualities you want from your roof and consult professional roofers for the structural issues related to choosing roof material.

Your living environment

Your house is an integral part of the surrounding environment and your roof is an effective way of making your house stand out or blend in, depending on the colour and roofing sheet you choose.

You might want your roof to match the style of your neighbours’ roofs, or there might even be strict regulations requiring new buildings and roofs in the area to look alike.

To find out more about local regulations and guidelines, ask for more information from your local construction authorities.

The appearance and shape of your house

House shapes

It is important that your roof’s appearance matches the overall identity of your house. Whether your style is modern and elegant or more traditional and decorated, you should choose a roof that perfectly matches your house.

The shape and colour of your roof are not decisions you should rush. A roof is a long-term investment, so when it comes to making a decision about roofing sheets and colours, feel free to consult our professionals.

Ease of maintenance

Living with a steel roof is easy. Compared to e.g. concrete tile roof or bitumen roof, dirt and grime don’t adhere to steel roofs and moss growth is minimal. A steel roof is easy to wash when needed and it will hold up in all weather conditions.

Worry-free Ruukki steel roofs come with a warranty, up to 50 years.

Roof understructures

When renovating your roof, you need to find out how much weight your roof’s understructure can bear unless you choose a steel roof.

Lightweight steel is the perfect material for any house, regardless whether you are renovating an existing roof or building a completely new home.

Sound insulation

Regardless of the material you choose for your roof, no roof is totally soundproof. The key elements defining your roof’s soundproofing qualities are the thickness of the isolation and the actual soundproofing materials used.

When you use Ruukki’s Classic Premium with soundproofing cloth attached underneath, the overall soundproofing of your house is increased by 6 decibels.

Roof pitch

The pitch of your roof will have an effect on the selection of your roofing sheet. A steel roof is suitable for almost all roofs except flat roofs and very low-pitched roofs. Our roofing sheets are designed to lead water away from the roof so for this reason the roof needs to have a minimum amount of pitch to function properly.

The pitch limitations are usually demonstrated as a proportion (e.g. 1:10) or by degree (e.g. 7°). For example, where the pitch is 1:10, for every 10 metres, the roof pitches by 1 metre.

Roof project costs and warranties

There is a direct correlation between the amount you invest in your roof and the length of warranty you get from Ruukki. Even a slight increase in your investment can result in an extended warranty, leaving you with a worry-free and longer-lasting roof, in which you may never have to invest in again. Ruukki’s steel roofs come in a variety of different variations regarding coating, shapes and warranties.

Your choice of coating will affect the warranty. Our best products with a Pural Matt coating offer a technical warranty of up to 50 years.

  • Technical warranty: we guarantee that the product sheets will stay mechanically undamaged for the given period of time.
  • Aesthetic warranty: we guarantee that the products coating and color will remain for the given period of time.

Roofing accessories, rainwater systems and safety products

The number of accessories (e.g. flashings), rainwater systems and roof safety products such as ladders and snow guards needed to finish your roof may vary and therefore affect the total cost.

Installation

The installation time required needs to be evaluated for each roofing project individually, and even though the material costs per square metre may be low, the installation can take time, increasing labour costs.

A particular benefit of steel roofs is their fast installation time: one sheet of Monterrey roofing sheet covers about 9 m2 but to cover the same area with natural tile sheet, the installer needs to use about 100 tiles, which takes time to install.

The shape and structure of your roof

If you have roof and bay windows, many chimneys or a steep roof pitch, these elements may increase the number of hours required for installation. Also your roof’s understructure may also need replacement and increase installation costs.

Do-it-yourself?

Installing the roof yourself may save on installation labour costs. When considering do-it-yourself installation, bear in mind that professional roofers have experience on solving unexpected complications, they have all of the right tools to make them highly productive finishing the work faster than you may be able to do and they have insurances to cover for accidents. Remember to ask your roofer for guarantee for installation work.

If you decide to do the installation work yourself, read more about Finnera roofing sheets that have been developed for do-it-yourself installations and can be bought from our dealers' storage.
